Ma Mie was registered by Ferdinand Cayeux in 1906. Like a true Parisian “Grande Dame”, she is understated and utterly elegant. Small, perfectly formed white flowers, with delicate violet stitching around the edges of the petals, held on slender stems above neat foliage. I always struggle to choose when people ask me what is my favourite iris, because I have many, but this one is always on that list, both because of its beauty and because, as the very earliest of our tall bearded irises to flower, it welcomes in the flowering season. I have it in my own garden growing with the deep blue iris “Mer du Sud” created by Ferdinand’s great grandson Richard Cayeux.

Ma Mie fu registrata da Ferdinand Cayeux nel 1906. Come una vera “Grande Dame” parigina, è sobria e assolutamente elegante. Piccoli fiori bianchi perfettamente formati, con delicate cuciture viola intorno ai bordi dei petali, tenuti su steli sottili sopra il fogliame pulito. Ho sempre difficoltà a scegliere quando le persone mi chiedono qual è il mio iride preferito, perché ne ho molti, ma questo è sempre in quella lista, sia per la sua bellezza sia perché, come la prima di nostri iris barbati alti a fiorire, Ma Mie accoglie la stagione della fioritura. Ce l’ho nel mio giardino, insieme con l’iris blu profondo “Mer du Sud” di Richard Cayeux, il pronipote di Ferdinand.
