Florentina is a historic iris dating to at least 1500, first recorded by Linnaeus in 1753.The flowers are an opalescent creamy white with gray-blue tints and smell strongly of violets. But it is the rhizomes of this iris and of iris pallida which are the source of the precious orris root essential oil, used in perfumery. Good in mass planting, especially as the leaves typically remain green in winter.
