Dating to 1932, this historic iris was bred from the famous iris “Amas”, which was one of the first tetraploid Irises to be widely circulated, and as such was one of the most significant Iris of its time, used extensively in early Iris breeding. The consequence of having tetraploid DNA was that Amas and its many children had much larger flowers than the diploid irises which had up to that point been all that was available to gardeners. Blue Gown has large dark purplish blue flowers with bright gold beard. It is tall and grows very vigorously.
